WWE SmackDown Live results Aug 14,2018

SmackDown's go-home show for SummerSlam takes place in Greenville, South Carolina tonight.

WWE Champion AJ Styles is set to defend against Samoa Joe at the pay-per-view. A few weeks ago, Joe viciously attacked Styles before signing the SummerSlam contract. Joe followed that up by mentioning Styles’ family. He noted that Styles cares more about being WWE Champion and called him a failure as a husband and father. Styles returned last week to address the comments but has more to say. Tonight, Styles intends to address Joe further ahead of their showdown on Sunday.

Last week, The New Day defeated The Bar in an excellent match in the finals of the tag team tournament, earning a title shot against SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers at SummerSlam. Before that, New Day will battle SAnitY in a six-man tag match tonight.

SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella will put her title on the line against Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair in a triple threat match on Sunday. Tonight, all three will come face-to-face in the ring. Plus, Aiden English takes on Andrade “Cien” Almas.

Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and SmackDown Women’s Champion Carmella came down to the ring for their face-to-face-to-face. Carmella feels that she’s constantly getting punished for being an amazing champion. Regardless, she’s the champion and life is good. She tried to create problems between Lynch and Flair. Carmella told Lynch to go back to being a clown because it’s the only thing she’s better at than Flair.

Lynch knew what Carmella was up to. Lynch is prepared to beat both of them but Carmella pointed out how hard it’s to defeat Flair. She also noted that she beat Flair twice. Flair’s tired of listening to Carmella. She pointed out that Carmella has to cheat to win and had to bring back James Ellsworth to beat Asuka. Flair called Carmella a diva in the women’s era.

Carmella said she is a diva and compared herself to both Flair and Lynch. She said she’s better looking, has a better body, more charisma and is the Women’s champion. Paige came out and announced that Flair and Lynch take on Mandy Rose and Sonya Deville next. 

Charlotte Flair & Becky Lynch defeated Mandy Rose & Sonya Deville

The faces were firmly in control until Rose pulled Flair down by the hair. Flair fought back and sent Deville to the floor. The heels regained control and isolated Flair on their side of the ring. Rose made the blind tag and rocked Flair with a knee.

After the commercial break, the heels were in control and isolated Lynch on their side of the ring. Lynch made a comeback and sent Deville to the floor. Finish came when Lynch locked on the Dis-arm-her on Rose for the win.

The Miz and Maryse announced that their series The Miz & Mrs. has been picked up for a second season. 

In the back, Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair celebrated their win. Flair pointed out that Lynch didn’t have to do it all alone. Flair wished Lynch luck but Lynch doesn’t need it and neither does Flair.

SmackDown Tag Team Champions The Bludgeon Brothers vs. The Triple Threat in a handicap match never officially started

The Bludgeon brothers completely dominated and destroyed the Triple Threat. The match never officially started.

Part 1 of the The Miz and Daniel Bryan story aired. The first part covered Bryan’s time as Miz’s rookie in the original NXT. Bryan noted that he competed all over the world but wanted to learn so he entered as a rookie.

Bryan felt that Miz was arrogant and had the stigma of a reality star. Clips aired of Miz on MTV’s The Real World. The tension between the two began during that time. Miz mocked Bryan for being eliminated and never winning a match on NXT.

Bryan pointed out that after he got away from Miz he used his own skills and defeated the Miz. That night Bryan realized he doesn’t need Miz but Miz needs him. Part 2 and 3 are still to come.

The New Day defeated SAnitY

The crowd chanted “Happy Birthday” for Kofi Kingston at the start of the match. Kingston leaped over Big E onto Eric Young for a near fall. Alexander Wolfe pulled down the top rope and Kingston crashed hard into the announce table. SAnitY isolated Kingston on their side of the ring. Kingston attempted a tag but Killen Dain rocked him with a drop kick.

Kingston nailed Dain with a DDT and Xavier Woods got the hot tag. Woods nailed Wolfe with a dropkick to the back. Woods had the match won but Young leaped off the top and nailed Woods with an elbow. Young gave Woods a Death Valley Driver into Wolfe’s double knees for a near fall.

Dain nailed Woods with a cross body but The New Day made a comeback. Kingston took out Young and Wolfe with a dive to the floor. Finish came when New Day gave Dain Up Up Down Down for the win.

Part 2 of the Miz and Daniel Bryan Story aired next. It covered the success both Bryan and Miz had. It detailed Bryan’s 2016 retirement and appointment as SmackDown GM. Miz claimed that Bryan was using his position to hold him down. It covered the Talking Smack segment where Bryan called Miz a coward and Miz went off on him. He told Bryan to leave and fight in bingo halls.

Bryan admitted that Miz hit a nerve and that he did want to leave and go some place else. Bryan gave his word to Vince McMahon that he’d finish out his contract. Bryan noted that he didn’t like that Miz stole his moves but he stayed silent. Miz said that he’s not only Bryan’s Pro but is his superior. 

In the back, Paige spoke to Samoa Joe. She pointed out that Joe could address the fans like AJ Styles will later but he refused. Joe said it’s because he’s shy. Paige needs Joe to be a professional and not ruin her SummerSlam main event.

Joe said that she picked him for the title shot because he’s unpredictable and has a killer instinct. He promised to do what he wants when he wants to. Paige and the WWE universe will have to deal with the consequences or He might just sit back and watch Styles speak later.

Andrade “Cien” Almas (w/Zelina Vega) defeated Aiden English

The story of the match was English is attempting to make up to Rusev and Lana for causing them to lose to Almas and Vega in seperate matches. English sang an apology and promised to make amends.

Almas was firmly in control and sent English into the corner. Almas attempted the double knees but English hit him first. Almas regained control with a back elbow and hit the double knees in the corner. Almas hit the Hammerlock DDT for the win.

After the match, Vega and Almas promised this Sunday at SummerSlam is the end of Rusev Day and Lana Day. Rusev and Lana came out and promised to defeat Almas and Vega because SummerSlam lands on Rusev Day this year.

AJ Styles met with Paige in her office. She asked Styles to remain professional and keep it together. Paige is worried about her main event. Styles made his wife a promise and he intends to keep it.

Part 3 of the Miz and Daniel Bryan story aired. It covered Bryan announcing his return to the ring and return at WrestleMania. It also covered Bryan getting Miz drafted from Raw to SmackDown.

Miz promised to beat Bryan and that he will have to admit that Miz is better. Bryan pointed out that Miz has surpassed him in some ways. Miz has a reality show and celebrity friends. Bryan doesn’t care about that stuff and returned because he loves wrestling. He’s going to shut Miz up at SummerSlam.

Jeff Hardy defeated Shelton Benjamin

Benjamin was firmly in control and slowed the match down. Hardy fought back and hit Whisper in the Wind. Hardy climbed to the top but Benjamin caught him with a knee and hit a superplex for a close near fall. Hardy made a come back and hit the Twist of Fate for the win.

After the match, United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura came out. Benjamin distracted Hardy and Nakamura jumped Hardy from behind. Nakamura attempted the Kinshasa but Hardy reversed into the Twist of Fate. Hardy then hit the Swanton Bomb on Nakamura.

Randy Orton was watching from afar from behind a curtain. This was pretty creepy looking. 

WWE Champion AJ Styles came out to address Samoa Joe and his title defense at SummerSlam. He discussed winning the title and the pressure that comes with being champion. He admitted that Joe has hit a nerve because he’s a mastermind. Styles showed Joe jumping him a few weeks ago and signing the SummerSlam contract. He also showed Joe’s comments about Styles being a failure as a father and husband.

Styles admitted that he lost his cool and talked about something very personal and private. He felt he had to defend his family and it made him go to a dark place. His wife Wendy told him to not lose his cool and to remain focus.

This brought out Samoa Joe. Joe pulled out a piece of paper from his pocket. He said that Styles comments were all a lie and he wants to help Styles keep his promise. Joe read a letter from a member of the WWE Universe.

In the letter, the fan said Joe’s remarks from two weeks ago are true. The fan was the biggest Style’s fan but isn’t any more. The fan believes Styles never wanted to get married or have kids. Styles is such a great champion because he’ll do anything to stay away from his family.

The fan hopes that Joe wins so Styles can know what it feels like to lose the thing he cares the most about because the fan lost him a long time ago. Joe claimed the letter was from Wendy Styles.
