WWE SMACKDOWN RESULTS AND LIVE BLOG FOR AUG. 21

On a dirty worn-out sidewalk, sits a mother with a baby, in her vale of tears she sees no rainbow, and someone’s singing from a window in the mission of the sacred heart. Watching all the days roll by, who are you and who am I? There’s a building on a corner, in a city, in a land, on a place they call the planet Earth. My orders are to sit here and watch the world go by, and to liveblog this here pro wrestling show, folks.
The show opens with Miz making his entrance, with Maryse at his side.
He stands somberly in the ring with his head bowed as the crowd chants for Daniel Bryan and he says he was able to feel that in a way that he never felt it before, and two nights ago at SummerSlam, something happened. Now he has a family to think about and he’s gonna make this really short. With a heavy heart and the utmost sadness-- he’s real choked up and Maryse hugs him before he continues-- he officially announces his retirement, to the utter joy of the crowd in Brooklyn.
His retirement, that is, from ever facing Daniel Bryan again. Yes! all you want, the eight-year saga of Miz and Daniel Bryan has come to a satisfying conclusion because he did exactly what he said he was going to do by beating Bryan in front of a sold-out Barclay’s Center. Don’t get him wrong, Dan gave him everything he had, he punched him a hundred times, but a hundred Bryan punches don’t amount to one Miz punch.
You’re looking at the hardest punch in WWE, and he did exactly what Bryan said he was going to do to him, except when he did it, he pinned him 1-2-3 in front of his gorgeous, sexy wife Maryse. That was Sunday, it’s now time to start his new life, a life where he’s gonna watch the fifth episode of Miz and Mrs. right after SmackDown right here on USA Network.
Enter Daniel Bryan. He has one word-- Coward. He says it over and over as Miz sputters a reaction out and hides behind his wife. The A-Lister says the record books will say he won and he’s superior in every single way, and Bryan has to live with never beating him, never being better than him, and never having a chance to fight him again. Dan tells him to shut up for once in his life, and his victory is another lie in his career like the lights he’s under and the makeup he’s wearing.
Dan says he said he’d punch him in the face and he did so take him for his word when he says he’s gonna expose Miz for what he really is, a wannabe Hollywood star cosplaying as a wrestler, and he’s not going to be able to retire yet, because-- Maryse cuts him off and tells him to retire and change his name to Daniel Bella already.
Enter Brie Bella! SHE CHARGES RIGHT PAST BRYAN AND PUNCHES MIZ IN THE FACE! SHE’S BEATING THE A-LISTER DOWN AND BRYAN JOINS HER, PUNCHING HIM CLEAN OUT OF THE RING! Dan and Brie stand tall and the American Dragon points out that his wife has a sweet punch. Plus, he just talked to Paige and they have a match at Hell in a Cell, but it’s not Bryan vs. Miz, it’s a mixed tag with their wives in!
Commentary hypes up some fallout from SummerSlam, including a no disqualification rematch between New Day and the Bludgeon Brothers for the tag titles.
We cut to Jeff Hardy being weird and hissing like a cat backstage and go to break.

Back from commercial, Miz and Maryse are irate and looking for Paige backstage when they roll up on her.
Miz asks if this is how she treats the stars of USA Network and he doesn’t get it, but Paige is somehow a worse general manager than Daniel Bryan. Paige offers a counterpoint that Miz got punched in the face by Brie Bella, the tag stays, and it’ll be... awesome.

Jeff Hardy vs. Randy Orton

Circling, Orton throwing right hands in the corner, piefacing him, and Hardy fires punches back, pushing Randy across the ring into the opposite corner. Knee lift, pass to the corner, Jeff up top, Orton slaps him to the floor and we go to break.
Back from commercial, Orton has a reverse chinlock in to ground Hardy. The Charismatic Enigma fights to his feet and out of the hold with elbows, but the Viper staggers him with a single shot. Whip to the corner, Jeff gets the boot up, perches up top... WHISPER IN THE WIND! Both men down and out, they get to their feet and Hardy gets in with punches. Whip reversed, lariat, Manhattan Drop to the double leg drop, the basement dropkick, Twist of Fate!
Jeff up top and Randy crotches him! Pull him by the hair, Orton again jams a finger into his gauge hole and yanks on the flesh of Hardy’s ear! Into the ropes, setting up the DDT, Jeff blocks it, double leg... AND A STOMP RIGHT TO THE GENTLEMAN’S AREA! Referee Mike Chioda has no choice but to throw it out...
Randy Orton wins by disqualification.
Hardy takes the fight to Orton on the floor! Double axehandle off the apron, tossing him over the announce table, Randy throws punches in return, big uppercut against the timekeeper’s barricade but Jeff levels him with a lariat and puts him into the ringpost face-first! Over the barricade and into the crowd, the Apex Predator tries to run away but Hardy pursues him to the audio technician’s station and clears a table!
Waffling a chair across Orton’s back, putting it into his midsection, wailing away on him with repeated shots and Randy ends up on the table. Punches for good measure to keep him down... JEFF’S GOT A CAMERA AND HE CRACKS IT ACROSS ORTON’S HEAD! He climbs up on some road cases, stacked a good eight feet in the air... SWANTON BOMB THROUGH THE TABLE!
Commentary hypes up our tag team rematch again as well as fallout from Becky Lynch’s attack and Naomi’s return match against Peyton Royce, and we go to break.

Back from commercial we get a recap of what we just saw, because what we just saw was pretty righteous.
The Bar are interviewed backstage and they say they want a shot at whoever comes out of the tag title match when the Club roll up to... audition for the pre-show panel. Gallows does a faux English accent, Anderson shows his abs off, and they lay claim to being the next challengers for the tag champs themselves, and say if the Bar have a problem with that they can have a wrestle.
Cesaro says Ed Sheeran likes them better than the Club and next week they’re gonna kick their heads off, because catchphrase.
We get entrances for Naomi vs. Peyton and the Iconic Duo want to play a guessing game during their entrance.
What’s overrated, loud, obnoxious and has flashing lights everywhere? Brooklyn! Or actually, that’s the answer to “What’s a dumpster fire?,” and Royce slowly realizes that Billie Kay is talking about Naomi and says that just like Brooklyn, Naomi is most definitely not iconic.
The match will begin after the break.

Naomi vs. Peyton Royce

Peyton with a headscissors, Naomi kips up, Royce ducks a kick combo but gets caught with a knee! Off the ropes, leg drop out of the splits, only a nearfall! Peyton to the floor, Naomi with a baseball slide, Billie runs interference and Royce gets a hellacious reverse roundhouse kick that knocks Naomi to the floor! Referee Charles Robinson counting while Kay taunts her, Naomi heads back in but Peyton is right on her with hammer blows and stomps for a nearfall!
Drawing her up, putting her face into the turnbuckles, choking her, Royce follows it up with repeated knees to the back into a rear chinlock. Swinging her around in the hold, Naomi get out, to the corner, sidestep a Mafia kick and she takes Peyton’s hamstring out! More leg kicks, dropkick, leaping lariat, springboard roundhouse kick... NOPE!
To the apron, roundhouse kick, taking Billie out with a front kick and a bulldog into the ringpost but Royce is able to take advantage and smash Naomi into the post. Back inside...
Peyton Royce wins by pinfall with a bridging fisherman suplex.
Backstage, indie wrestler CPA is a trainer taping Big E’s ribs up when the other two New Day guys roll up to check on him. He’s eating ribs, so there’s a bit of confusion, but Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods say they have things covered tonight and reiterate their history in Brooklyn and their conviction that they’re going to win the tag titles back tonight.
Kofi wants to slap hands but E has a rib in his meaty paw and he settles for a fist bump.
A recap of the SmackDown Women’s Championship match from SummerSlam follows and we get a long shot of Becky Lynch’s locker room door that sends us to break.

Back from commercial, Becky Lynch makes her entrance.
She says she deserves to be standing here as Women’s Champion, and Charlotte Flair deserves the beating she gave her for taking that from her. SummerSlam was supposed to be her time, she had fought her way for months and earned her way into a singles match against Carmella and had even gotten over Charlotte being added to the match because finally it was her opportunity to silence the critics who said she was just Flair’s friend.
She pictured raising the title over her head as her own woman, saying she put the SmackDown women’s division on the map, and the fans act like they’re with her, but were they the whole time? There was no #GiveBeckyAChance and when Charlotte weaseled her way into the match there was no boycott, and when Flair stole the match from her they got out of their seats and applauded the new champion, so they weren’t really that upset, were they?
And somehow when anyone asks the WWE Universe who the greatest superstar of all time, Becky Lynch isn’t the first name out of our mouths and somehow she’s been made an afterthought. Come SummerSlam she’d had enough of opinions and decided to take action, because the referee slapping the mat for the third time was like someone counting her out of a trance and she never saw more clearly before in her life.
She knew in that moment that her so-called best friend was holding her back and that Charlotte had stolen her spotlight for the last time, that she was going to raise her hand and rip her head off, because this was supposed to be her time to be champion, and not because we say it, but because she says it, and she’s the best, and there’s no one anywhere that can tell her different.
Enter Charlotte Flair. She rushes the ring and takes Lynch down for mounted punches! Lynch turns it around with punches of her own and they spill to the floor! Putting boots to the Queen, Becky tries to beat it over the barricade and Flair yanks her back in and throws her into the ring! Front kick into more punches, referees try to separate them and Paige brings the entire women’s division out to pull them apart!
Charlotte breaks free and gets hands on Lynch again but they get pulled apart! Becky breaks away this time and again they get separated! SPEAR THROUGH THE ROPES! CHARLOTTE OFF THE APRON INTO MORE PUNCHES AS THEY TRY AND PULL THEM APART! WE GOTTA GO TO BREAK!

Back from commercial, Andrade “Cien” Almas and Zelina Vega make their entrance.
They get a picture-in-picture promo where they question why Rusev Day want this rematch given that they lose every time.

Andrade “Cien” Almas & Zelina Vega vs. Rusey Day (Lana & Rusev) (Mixed Tag Team Match)

Rusev and Almas to start, Andrade with a shove and an overhand chop, the Bulgarian Lion shrugs them off and knocks him down with a lariat! Wicked elbow drops and a stomp follow, he draws Cien up but gets cut off with a jawbreaker. Putting boots to Rusev in the corner, Andrade fired up, knee lift, whip reversed, back elbow to cut him off, looking for the inverted tornado DDT, the Bulgarian Lion blocks... CROSS ARMBAR IN THE ROPES!
Breaking at referee Danilo Anfibio’s insistence, Almas springboards... AND GETS CUT OFF WITH A SUPERKICK! Tag to Lana, she jumps off of Cien to knock Vega loopy and she and Rusev stand tall in the ring to send us to break.
Back from commercial, Vega has a sleeper hold in but Lana backs her into the turnbuckles to break it. Zelina with a kick, keeping the momentum, Tiger feint kick into a crucifix neck crank over the middle rope and a cover for a nearfall in the ring! Off the ropes, crucifix applied but Lana remains on her feet, Vega tries a sunset flip, reversed, trading covers, Lana wants the tag but a mat slam cuts her off!
Lana takes a shot at Almas on the apron, reaching for the tag, she kicks Zelina away, tag made and Rusev comes in hot! Freight train in the corner, huge Shinjiro Ohtani spinning wheel kick, the Bulgarian Lion fired up and tuning up the band. Machka Kick blocked, spinning backfist DESTROYS him, corner knees... NOT ENOUGH! Drawing him up, underhooks, Rusev blocks, back suplex but Cien lands on his feet and the Bulgarian Lion clotheslines him to the floor!
Vega in shoving at Rusev, Lana takes her down... AIDEN ENGLISH SAVES THE DAY BY TAKING A CHAIR FROM ANDRADE! Machka Kick, stomp to the back...
Rusev Day win by submission with the Accolade from Rusev on Andrade “Cien” Almas.
Aiden tells them he always has their back as they celebrate in the ring and acknowledge that he did good this time.
Shinsuke Nakamura gets a handcam promo where he talks about the inscription on the Statue of Liberty and how he disposed the clown Jeff Hardy and deserves a coronation as the American hero he is, and he welcomes us to the United States of Nakamerica.
Commentary hypes up our tag title rematch once more and we go to break.

Back from commercial we get some hype for a tornado tag between the Lucha House Party and the team of Buddy Murphy and Tony Nese.
A recap of the WWE Championship match between AJ Styles and Samoa Joe at SummerSlam (god that’s a hell of a phrase, ain’t it?) follows.
AJ Styles makes his entrance and is interviewed on the stage. He hesitates to collect his thoughts about the end of his match at SummerSlam and admits the match didn’t end how he wanted, but he doesn’t regret what he did to Samoa Joe. He lost the match because of his actions and he’s not proud of that, but Joe crossed a line that real man doesn’t cross.
He broke a promise, but let him make a promise to the WWE Universe and his family, one that he will not break-- the next time Samoa mentions his family’s name, he’s gonna rip his heart out and show it-- JOE YANKS STYLES OFF THE STAGE AND CHOKES HIM OUT WITH THE COQUINA CLUTCH! Samoa gets on the mic and calls AJ’s wife Wendy out and says we’re making a lot of promises tonight, including one to go home and tuck in the kids, but guess what, daddy’s already gone night-night!
He leaves AJ for dead and stands tall on the stage.
A recap of the opening segment follows, because it was awesome and worth seeing Brie Bella punch Miz in the face all over again.
Informed that the tag title rematch is up next, we go to break.

Back from commercial, Paige puts referee Drake Wuertz in charge of making sure AJ Styles gets appropriate medical attention.
Carmella rolls up on her and Paige tries to figure out what’s different before realizing that she’s lost some weight-- ten pounds of gold, in fact. Carmella tells her not to title shame her and demands her rematch when R-Truth rolls up to complain that she’s been ducking him for weeks and he’s gonna get that title match by pinning her. Paige explains that just because Charlotte and Becky got their title match by pinning Carmella doesn’t mean he can do the same, and Truth leaves, saying she got lucky this time.
Paige books the one-on-one rematch for next week and Carmella moonwalks away, but Paige has to yell at R-Truth to put her down.

Bludgeon Brothers (Erick Rowan & Luke Harper) (c) vs. New Day (Kofi Kingston & Xavier Woods) (WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship No Disqualification Match)

All out brawling to start, the Bludgeons taking New Day to the floor and clawing away at them. Kofi comes back on Luke, trading chops, he floats over a suplex, lands on the announce table, hits a kick and Xavier dropkicks Harper over the table! Rowan over, knocking Woods into the barricade... LUKE HARPER THREW AN OFFICE CHAIR AT KINGSTON WHAT IN THE WORLD?! TO BREAK!
Back from commercial and the Bludgeons are in charge, Erick working Kofi over in the ring as Woods gets shots in on Harper at ringside. Back suplex, lands on his feet, rolling elbow and a drop toehold into the announce desk! Kingston passes through the ropes, gamengiri, low bridge and a Penalty Kick off the apron! New Day head under the ring for some plunder and pull out a ladder!
Rowan from behind, he holds them in place... TOPE CON HARPER WIPES NEW DAY OUT! The tag champs get chairs out before Harper throws Xavier into the steel steps and chokes Kofi with a foot. Rowan sets Kingston up on the apron and they take turns hammering him with shots. Boot from Rowan, they take Kingston out with an assisted big boot and put him in the ring... NOPE!
Enzuigiri connects, Erick and Xavier get into it on the floor, Kofi with a boot up on a chair shot... TORNADO DDT ONTO A CHAIR BUT ROWAN PULLS HIM OUT OF THE RING FOR THE SAVE! FREIGHT TRAIN IS A-ROLLING AND ERICK WIPES NEW DAY OUT ON THE FLOOR! Double back suplex facebuster puts Woods into the apron! In the ring, Harper opens the chairs and sets the ladder across them, building a structure for violence.
Dragging Xavier up, looking for the double crucifix powerbomb but Kingston dives in for the save! Headbutt connects... DOUBLE CRUCIFIX POWERBOMB INTO THE LADDER STRUCTURE... KOFI KINGSTON FINDS THE WILL TO KICK OUT! Rowan gets a table and slides it into the ring for Harper to set up, and kicks Woods aside when he tries to grab his leg and stop him from returning to the ring.
Kofi rolls to the floor, the tag champs follow after him and Erick hammers him with headbutts trapped against the ringpost! Luke gets the mallet and slaps Rowan across the face to fire him up, he charges... XAVIER PULLS KOFI OUT OF THE WAY AND ERICK PLOWS THROUGH THE TIMEKEEPER’S BARRICADE! Harper takes Woods out with a superkick!
Back inside, Luke thinking Brodie Bomb through the table but Kofi smashes him with the malle to the midsection to stop him! TROUBLE IN PARADISE! Setting him up on the table, Woods perches... LIMIT BREAKER THROUGH THE TABLE! IT’S OVER!
New Day win by pinfall with Limit Breaker through a table from Xavier Woods on Luke Harper to win the WWE SmackDown Tag Team Championship.
Big E joins them to celebrate their fifth tag team championship together.
That’s the show, folks.
